MATHS AND SCIENCE

Term 3 is coming to its end and students are frantically working to finish their assessment tasks. Students have studied various concepts in Maths and Science. The following is the feedback from the 7/8 students about their learning in term 3.

In Maths class, I really enjoyed learning about linear equations and how to solve them. Measurement was another unit that we studied this term and we did a group project where we had to use a garden design drawn on a grid to answer the questions. In our Science class, we learnt about the anatomy of the cells (both plant & animal’s) and the functions of their organelles. We also studied the difference between plants, animals and bacterial cells. In Research Science we studied different topics and performed various experiments. The experiment on plant chemistry was the most interesting one. In this experiment, we extracted colour from different vegetables and fruits and we dyed fabric with it. We used onion, beetroot, spinach, berries (blue berries, black berries and raspberries) and mandarin skins to extract the colour. Onions worked well, beetroot is faint, mandarin is very faint and spinach is very, very pale - almost no colour! We learnt that a better mordant might be alum.

In Term 3, we learnt about classification in general and classification of plants and animals in different kingdoms. We also studied plant and animal cells, different parts of a cell and their functions. It was interesting to learn how different cells work together to perform specialized functions. In Maths, we studied the units of Measurement and Linear Graphs.

I enjoyed learning new concepts in Term 3. The concepts in Maths were interesting but challenging. In Maths, we studied the units of Measurement and Linear Graphs. I also enjoyed my Forensic Science classes. During Forensic Science, we learnt about handwriting analysis. Experiments in Research Science were also fun especially experiments based on Plant Chemistry.
